When deciding which dog carrier to buy for your small dog, you are presented with many designs, sizes, and materials. Some small dog carriers are made for you to wear and take along everywhere,  and some are specifically designed for airline, car, or bike travel.  Materials used to build dog carriers also vary: wire, leather, cotton, canvas, plastic, etc.

TYPES OF DOG CARRIERS

Tote dog carriers: This type looks and functions like a regular tote bag or handbag to be wore on the shoulder.

Purse dog carriers: Similar to a tote bag carrier but to be hold in your hand.

Backpack dog carrier: This type is very convenient as it leaves both hands free. They come in two styles, where your dog can either face forwards or backwards.

Front dog carriers: These also come in two different versions; the pouch style and the baby type. The pouch kind comes in two different forms. One resembles a kangaroo’s pouch,  well-padded and attaching close to the body. The sling type is meant to be carried over the shoulder with an adjustable band.  The baby type functions the same way as a baby carrier in which the pet is suspended by his torso with legs out facing forward.

Wheeled dog carriers: This type is very convenient since even the lightest dog can become tiresome to carry after a period of time. These carriers look and function similar to any wheeled luggage, they have a pulled out handle and four wheels, and can be taken  everywhere easily while your dog is comfortable and secure.

Crates: Crates offer the most secure enclosure along with better ventilation and visibility; they are made of lightweight materials and some models can be folded for easy packing and cleaning when traveling. However, not all dog crates are designed for transporting your pet during travel. USDA approved, heavy-duty carriers are required by most domestic and international airlines when flying whether the small dog is going with you under the plane seat or stored in cargo.

Be sure to get the proper size a dog crate carrier. It should be roomy enough for your dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. It doesn’t need to be much bigger than that otherwise it can be dangerous in case of an accident.

Dog crates are available in either hard plastic, wire mesh or with soft sides such as mesh or tent-like material.  But, when you buy your dog crate, don’t forget to also purchase a crate cushion to offer your best friend maximum comfort.

Multifunctional carriers: As mentioned above, you may not have the strength to carry your pooch for long periods when using a dog carrier you wear. One heck of option is the multifunctional carrier which can be transformed from a purse, to a backpack, to a wheeled carrier, and to a car seat in seconds.

Bike dog carriers: You have two options here; baskets or trailers. The basket type attaches directly to the front of a bike by an universal adapter that can be mounted on any bike. These baskets are safe for dogs weighting up to 15 lbs. and can also be used as over-the-shoulder bags or as carriers in a car.

Bike trailers come with aerodynamic shapes and large wheels, which make pedaling easy, and with enough room for dogs up to 50 lbs.
